A hybrid is a cross between 2 purebred breeds...not a mutt but with predictable characteristics...one of which is "hybrid vigor"...this comes from the genetic diversisty of the 2 breeds. Health and temperament is often better than either of the individual breeds. A similarity of "type" is helpful in determing size, coat, ear carriage, etc. Several examples of popular hybrids are Cocker x Poodle, Schnauzer x Yorkie, Maltese x Poodle. Short haired breeds such as Chihuahua, Miniature Pinscher and Toy Fox Terriers produce extremely cute, lively and long lived crosses.
